I have adult ADHD. I was diagnosed like 4 or so years ago, and was put on Ritalin. I don’t remember the exact dose but I think it was somewhere around 30mg/day. It worked well; helped me focus/ pay attention, sit still/ stay in one place (which is probably my biggest issue), but when it began to wear off I started to feel like crap. Sometimes to the point where I thought I was dying because my heart was beating so fast. My doc then prescribed me klonopin to help with this- and it did. Now, I take Adderall 10mg, usually 3x a day, and have switched from klonopin to xanax to help with the anxiety. Recently I discovered that basically everyone in my birth family has big anxiety issues and is on medication for them anyway (I’m adopted which is why I found this out recently). So it really depends on the person whether adderall or ritalin works best- I prefer adderall.

And the dose doesn’t necessarily have to do with age or size either, it has to do with what works best for you and you might have to experiment a bit to see what is best. I will say that I am not personally a fan of Adderall XR (extended release), though some people prefer it to regular adderall. I was on it for a while and it made me feel like i was going insane. But with the regular adderall 10mg 3x a day and the xanax 1mg 3x a day, I do fine. Sometimes I take a ‘break’ from the adderall- maybe taking only 5-10 mg that day. I find if I don’t take it at all I get a headache- but no other withdrawal symptoms. It makes me less hungry- when I first started on the ADD meds, I couldn’t stomach food, but now I eat normally and actually get hungry about 30 mins after I take it. The other thing is that it actually calms me down- some days if I am trying to take a break from it or forget to take it, I start to get fidgety and anxious. Then I take half and feel better.

The only downsides for me are that it makes me want to smoke cigarettes more often when I’m on it, and sometimes I have trouble falling asleep (but that could be due to other things as well), and another thing is I can’t handle caffeine like…at all. I used to drink like 6 cups of coffee/ black tea/ coke a day before the meds, and now I can only have like half a cup of tea in the morning (I need my Barry’s Irish tea in the morning- I swear it cures everything), and maybe some later on in the day. Also it helps me to have a little bit of caffeine when the adderall is wearing off- it just makes the come-down a bit smoother. I do find that when I take the adderall regularly, though, that I do much better, instead of taking it on an as needed basis. Sorry for the essay lol. Hope this helped. Feel free to message me. =)
